The central motif of the presentation of the author's recent work in the exhibition of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague is the Starmen. It is a theme that the author has been working on for some time and has been working on it in various variations. Janecký generally focuses on head-busts, or figures or half-figures, even animal ones. He is not dealing with copies, he puts his own shape rhetoric into their forms, but we can feel that he likes to move in the historical space of ancient cultures, or baroque-classical sculptural portraits of mostly masculine type. Martin Janecký started to deal with starmen at a time when he wanted to advance his work with space, and he saw the way to do so in the incorporation of various geometric shapes into the objects he was creating. The initial impulse for a concrete solution was the collaboration with Petr Nikl. He once came to the studio wearing a leather cap with pointed protrusions, and Martin Janecký was intrigued by them. It was a free inspiration that led to further steps to develop the form of the portrait into space by means of cones protruding from the surface of the head in different variations, sizes and directions. He called these fictional heads, with their radiation of luminous rays evoking cosmic stars, Starmen - in the spirit of a loose association with David Bowie's song Starman. Starmen of various types form a cycle in Janecký's work, culminating in the meeting of the two Magnifying Starmen of 2022 in this exhibition.
